June 24 Virused Again!
Guess what I am back again!   It has been quite awhile since my last update but it was quite unavoidable as I was hit with virus once again. This time, however, I downloaded it myself!
I was trying to watch a movie that I had downloaded but I was missing one of the codecs so that I could't see it properly. I surfed around the Net for a bit but couldn't find what I was looking for. Then I remembered that Shareza (my favorite file sharing program) had a help page where I might find the codecs that I needed. So after studying some of the codecs I found a couple that looked like they might do the trick and I proceeded to download them thinking that in a few minutes I would finally get to see my movie. Of course I virus scanned the files that I had downloaded and no viruses were detected. So I opened the files and installed the codecs. But you see even though I have an excellent Virus Scanner, Avast!, I had forgotten to add a check mark in the area in Avast! that would have checked into archived files. While my scanner does check into unopened files such as RAR, ZIP, and EXE files (these being the most common of the downloaded files) it can't do so unless the program is told to. *sigh* Well to make a long story short one of the files that I had downloaded was infected with a virus. Because of my oversite I almost wiped out my computer! It seemed innocent enough when I opened it, it even said "welcome" to me. There were lots of files inside, most of which I knew about except one. It had a red icon that I had never seen before which was named "Sniper" or "Snipe", something like that. Being a very curious person I just had to open that file. I clicked on it and a very pleasant woman's voice said welcome to me once again. Only this time there was another message as well, written on the bottom of my screen was this message or as close as I can remember it. "You have been virused! If you touch the delete button your computer will be turned into a unless piece of junk!" I called my son and together we tried all kinds of different scans but now that it was in my machine, there was no way get rid of it. Finally, Jonnie got the idea that maybe if we uninstalled the program that might work. Well we were not going to delete it and it didn't say we couldn't uninstall it, did it?. So Jonnie went into the add/remove program in Control Panel and removed it that way. It seemed to work and my computer started working normally again. It was late now and Jonnie was tired so he decided to go to bed but,just to be safe,in the morning he decided that he was going to format my hard drive. After he left to go to bed I decided that I was going to move some of my files over to my other drive. While these files were being moved I decided to have some coffee and ran downstairs to get to get a cup! I was in for a surprise when I got back, as my computer had shut down and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get it to turn on. The virus had done exactly as it promised, my computer was nothing more than a high priced useless piece of junk! When Jonnie got up the next morning I told him what had happened and my son of course, not one to be beaten , especially by a virus, decided he was going to find a way to format my hard drive no matter how long to took. He was determined to fix my computer because I had just bought my 160 gig hard drive last month and it had taken me what seemed like forever to save up for it. I was slowly getting the system that I wanted by buying it one piece at a time and having my son build it for me. The trouble was that NOW my computer didn't read my hard drive anymore as a master drive. So with a bit of quick thinking, Jonnie made my hard drive into a slave drive with my DVD Burner as the master drive. He was then able to format my hard drive but he still can't get my computer to except it as the master drive but he is working on it. Meanwhile my computer seems to be working almost normally and you can be sure that I am more careful now.
The name of the infected file is: Tsunami Codec & Filter Pack - Full Version (15.69 MB) There is no doubt in my mind that when this started out it just contained the codecs and filters but then somewhere along the line the virus was added. Even though I found this file through Shareza I can not and do not fault them. I do not believe that even they knew what this file contained. I have used Shareza in the past and will continue to use them in the future because it is a great file sharing program and shouldn't be faulted for the trouble one person caused. You know it's a shame that someone with such a talent would waste it on such destructive endeavors. Maybe one day the person will come to understand that hurting people is not just some harmless way to have a bit of fun! People, who like myself, have very little money and can't just walk into a store and buy another computer to replace the one that was destroyed by a virus. If it wasn't for my son fixing mine I would have had to take down Kitty's Kavern and Kitty's Recipes Galore! It would make no sense to keep them up if I couldn't keep them updated. Meanwhile Jonnie is trying to keep my computer running for me and I'm back to saving pennies again trying to srcape up enough money to buy another smaller hard drive to use as a master and my 160 gig will have to be a permanent slave drive but I will at least I will still have it.
I have learned a hard but valuable lesson from all this! "Curiosity killed the cat but it isn't going to get Kitty again."

May 19 Missing Child turns out to be a Hoax! As it turns out this missing child alert turned out to be a hoax but not on Callie's part!
Apparently some 17 year old figured it would be a great joke but it seems that it got out of hand!

May 04 Back Again and Quitting TOO!   Hi everyone!
I just wanted to you to know that I am back again! I am, at this moment running on Win 98 but I am limping along anyway!
As Callie said my computer was virused by a friendly looking little automatic update. The little bugger self-installs and shuts down your computer all on it's own! But when your computer restarts you will find that it that the "Update" has disabled your Firewall and your virus scanner as well! It also disables MSN Messenger and even your abilitiy to get into your Hotmail account so that you can't get your e-mail.com. After a bit you will find that your programs on your computer will lose their integrity and they become unstable. This little innocent looking "Automatic Update" is self-installing so if you see it, your best bet is to click on the X in the corner before it starts it's shut-down countdown then shut down your computer as Callie stated down below. If it shuts down your computer it will have done it's job and will play havoc with your programs. I was virused twice before I realized what this "Update" was!!!
Callie and I have done a bit of research and while we didn't find out what it is called we did find out that Mircosoft has advised that you do your updating at their site manually for now. Please disable you Automatic Updates so that you don't run into the problems that I have!

May 25 My Brother's Untimely DeathToday was going on just like everyday with me doing the usual. You know housecleaning, making meals, doing dishes, just plain normal. After supper I went out back to the garage to help my son while he was cleaning a couple of cars for a cab company. After we finished the first one Jonnie delievered it to the driver but this time he took longer than usual to come back. When he did get back he told me that I had better sit down as he had something to tell me. I thought he was kidding with me till I saw the look on his face that told me he was serious. The news that he had to tell me was that my step-brother was dead and that he had died.......two months ago. |
Donald had died of a massive heart attack and I wasn't even informed. Needless to say I was in shock. Why hadn't my family told me? Why did an outsider have to tell us that my step-brother had died? After all we all live in the same town. I am not one of those people who moves around all the time. I have been in the same place for the last four or five years. Sometimes I feel like I don't matter to this family or that I just don't exist. 
So here I am, two months after the fact and I have only just started the grieving process while the rest of my family are now well on the way to healing.|
