10 February Heaven on Earth
Cape Breton Island
An American artist decided to write a book about famous churches around the world. For his first chapter he had chosen to write and photograph various churches from the south to the north. He began his trek in Orlando and would progress north. On his first day, he was inside a church taking photographs when he noticed a golden telephone mounted on the wall with a sign that read $10,000.00 per call. The artist, being intrigued, asked a priest who was strolling by what the phone was used for. The priest replied that it was a direct line to Heaven and that for $10,000.00 one could talk to God. Next stop was Atlanta, in a very large cathedral, he saw the same golden phone with the same sign under it. He wondered if this was the same kind of phone he had seen in Orlando, and asked a nearby nun what its purpose was. She told him that it was a direct line to Heaven and he could talk to God for $10,000.00. He traveled to Indianapolis, Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York, Boston and on to the state of Maine. In every church he saw the same golden phone with the same $10,000.00 per call sign under it.After completing his last stop in Bangor, he traveled through Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. All the churches had the same display. After leaving Halifax he spotted a sign saying ‘Route 105, east to Cape Breton Island’.A short while later he arrived in Cape Breton, and sure enough in one of the local churches, there again was the golden phone, only this time the sign under it read 25 cents per call. The American was very surprised and so intrigued that he asked the church’s priest about the sign. "Father, I’ve traveled all over America and Canada and I’ve seen the same golden phone in all the churches, I’m told that it is a direct line to Heaven, but the price everywhere else is $10,000.00 per call. Why is it so cheap here?"The priest smiled and answered: ”You’re in Cape Breton Island now son, it’s just a local call.” Keep smiling. If you’re proud to be a Cape Bretoner, pass this on…
